Advocacy
JVMS advocates for policies that protect and advance veterinary medicine. Stay informed about telehealth regulations, mid-level practitioner roles, and controlled substance scheduling.
Telehealth in Veterinary Medicine
The FVMA PAC has been at the forefront of ensuring that telehealth policies support veterinary practitioners while maintaining high standards of care. Recent legislative efforts have focused on establishing safe and effective telemedicine protocols that protect patient welfare and enable veterinarians to expand their reach responsibly.
Mid-Level Practitioner Legislation
Legislation has been proposed in the Florida Legislature to create a “Mid-Level Practitioner” in Veterinary Medicine. This position, if approved, has no regulatory oversight and allows the individual to perform surgery, diagnose and prescribe. As written it actually allows for these individuals to do everything that a licensed veterinarian can do with only limited online education and limited clinical training. The FVMA opposes this legislations and sees it as an unneeded risk for the animal population in FL. The FVMA does support elevating our technicians with increased training and responsibilities in our practices, especially our Credentialed Veterinary Technicians who we are co-sponsoring licensing legislation with the Florida Veterinary Technicians Association.
Xylazine Scheduling
In response to increasing concerns over controlled substances, xylazine scheduling has become a critical topic. The FVMA PAC advocates for legislation that balances the responsible use of xylazine in veterinary medicine with public health interests, helping veterinarians retain access to essential tools for animal care.

Consider the impact seen in the dentistry field: PAC funding has been pivotal in securing favorable policies for dental professionals, including expanded practice rights and healthcare protections. By contrast, limited veterinary PAC funds mean our voices risk being overshadowed in legislative discussions. Your support can make the difference in our ability to stand strong for veterinary medicine.
